Armored Trucks Seized in Mexican Drug War

Armored Trucks Seized – Police in the border state of Tamaulipas in northern Mexico have seized a total of five armored vehicles, along with military gear, helmets and ammunition. The haul was found last weekend in the town of Ciudad Camargo, just across from Rio Grande City, Texas.

The vehicles were discovered in a field, where officers had noticed a man with a gun who appeared to be guarding them. As police got closer to the scene, the man opened fire and fled on foot.

Two homemade armored combat tanks and three other smaller bulletproof vehicles were seized. Police said the two heavier vehicles are known in the region as ‘Monsters’, which was a nickname given to an armored tank-like truck found in the area in 2010. The tanks had firing towers on top and a ramming plate at the front. The three other vehicles were comparable to pickup trucks that had steel plates welded on them to be used as protective gun firing positions.

Turf wars have been waged in the region between the Zetas cartel and some factions of the Gulf cartel, with many battles taking place over a decade ago.

State police said that this kind of vehicle is regularly used in confrontations in the area.

It was also announced yesterday that two other vehicles were  discovered, along with guns and ammunition, in the border state of Sonora. The trucks had steel-plate bullet-proofing, and were seized in  Caborca, a city on the boundary of Pima County, Arizona.  This area has seen battles fought between the sons of former drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, and a gang with alleged ties to fugitive Rafael Caro Quintero, one of the founders of the Guadalajara cartel. Quintero is currently on the FBI’s ‘Most Wanted’ list for the murder of DEA agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena in 1985.
