Massive Mexican Meth Lab Discovered

A massive narcotics production lab has been seized by police and soldiers on the outskirts of the Mexican capital, Mexico City. It’s reported the premises were used to produce meth and fentanyl.

The industrial-scale meth lab was discovered last week after Mexican marines gathered intelligence which indicated ingredients were being imported from China via a company in Hong Kong. A shipment was monitored by marines as it moved through a port in Japan to the coastal city of Ensenada in Mexico. The containers were searched and an undisclosed amount of three precursor chemicals was discovered, which could be converted into fentanyl by using a simple process.

The lab was situated in a large warehouse behind a storefront which advertised industrial cleaning products. There were extensive towers of drums and 265-gallon chemical tanks, which held elements to produce methamphetamine and fentanyl

Felipe de Jesus Gallo of the federal Attorney General’s Office said, ‘’The lab had chemical preparation vats about two stories tall that could process 11,000 pounds, or 5,000 kilograms, of raw material at a time. In the Attorney General’s Office, we have no record of any seizure of equipment of this size before.’’

Codename Blue

The operation was codenamed ‘Blue’, and also involved a series of coordinated raids on several other properties around Mexico City. Raids were also carried out in the state of Durango. A lab was also seized in Sonora, where authorities discovered 290 kilograms of meth, which reportedly had a high level of purity.

‘’Some of the drugs were destined for the United States,’’ Gallo said.

An engineer was arrested at one of the properties in Mexico City. It’s reported he allegedly ran the labs for an organized crime syndicate. He was found with a drum of what seemed to be an ingredient of fentanyl, along with written instructions on its use.

There was evidence to suggest that the entire operation was being funded and run by people with ties to a group in Sinaloa.
