It has recently been announced that Narcos: Mexico will be returning for a third season on Netflix. The series, which follows the illegal drug trade in Mexico, premiered on November 16, 2018. The first season of Narcos: Mexico was originally intended as a fourth season of the original Narcos, which concentrated on the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar and the Colombian cocaine business. Instead, it was produced as a companion series, and shifted focus from Colombia to Mexico.
The series explores and dramatizes the early days of Mexican drug traffickers, from the time when they were random and disorganized cannabis growers, through to the emergence of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s. Miguel Félix Gallardo was a man with a vision, and he worked to unite the independent traffickers and built a massive empire. On the flip-side are the DEA agents, working to gather enough intelligence in order to bring the network down. The third season will explore the decline of Gallardo’s empire following his imprisonment for the abduction and murder of DEA agent Kiki Camarena. At the end of Season Two, the Sinaloa, Juarez and Tijuana Cartels were gearing up to take Gallardo’s place, and Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman was on the rise. The upcoming season will be set in the 1990s, looking at the independent cartels, political upheaval and escalating violence.

Season Three will see some changes at the helm. Co-creator of the series, Carlo Bernard, will take over from Eric Newman as showrunner. Newman is stepping back after working for five years on Narcos, but will remain involved as an executive producer.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Newman said, “I am grateful for my five years at the helm of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, and immensely proud of what this spectacular team has achieved with these shows. When we began this endeavor – making a show in two languages, in a country that had never seen this kind of production – it seemed insane. But Netflix saw its potential then and their faith in us never wavered. Carlo Bernard is the first person I ever spoke to about this project, over 10 years ago, and I am extremely pleased to leave the steering of season three of Narcos: Mexico in his extremely capable hands.”

Series lead, Diego Luna, who played Félix Gallardo, will not be reprising his role in Season Three – he is due to begin work on Rogue One, the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff.
The actor who played Pablo Escobar in the first two seasons of Narcos, Wagner Moura, will return, but will be on the other side of the camera – he will be directing two episodes in the new season.
A release date has not yet been revealed.
