Jalisco New Generation Cartel Narco-Sub Seized

One of the foremost drug cartels in Mexico, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has been dealt a major upset by authorities in Colombia. 

The Colombian army and anti-drug police force were involved in a joint operation to intercept a semi-submersible ship which was en route to Mexico. The sub was cut off 52 miles from the Colombian Pacific coastal city of Tumaco on August 23. The narco-submarine was found to contain a massive $18 million worth of cocaine weighing over one ton, and was seemingly being transported to be delivered to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. According to Intelligence reports, the shipment was the property of Grupos Armados Organizados Residuales E-30 (Residual Organized Arms Groups), a criminal organization linked to the Gulf Clan. The group had an agreement with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel to sell and deliver 1,055 kilos of cocaine to them, with the drop destined for the resort town of Costa Careyes, Jalisco. It was due to arrive there during the first week of September. Three suspects, believed to be citizens of Ecuador, were arrested on board the vessel.

Colombian authorities said, “The semi-submersible is worth around USD 1.2 million, it can carry up to 3 tons, and has a satellite navigation system that, according to investigations, would allow the suspected to arrive in Costa Careyes, in the Mexican state of Jalisco, during the first week of September.” 

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel has grown to become a serious player in the region, and their influence currently rivals that of the more established cartels. They have a presence in at least 24 states in Mexico, and have been involved in smuggling various drugs into the U.S. such as heroin, methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine. 

The CJNG is headed by Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Oseguera.  The Drug Enforcement Agency is currently offering a $10million reward for information leading to his capture.
