El Tio Arrested in Raid at Medallin Home

It’s being reported that the son of Colombian drug lord, Luis Del Rio (also known as El Tio), tipped off police regarding his father’s activities and whereabouts, leading to his arrest at his home, La Fortaleza, in Medallin.

Along with the raid on his home, authorities are said to have seized 300 other properties owned by El Tio.

Police were also said to have arrested one of his alleged partners ‘Jacobo‘ as well as another gang member named Chepe, who jumped from a third-floor window as the raid began. It’s reported that ‘Chepe’ died during the escape attempt.

Reports have claimed El Tio started an affair with his son’s wife and had regular romantic liaisons at a property in Girardota, Antioquia where he allegedly had sex with underage girls, though this has not been verified. (1)

At the property, police found an altar where it is believed the suspect also practised black magic, according to some reports. (1)

El Tio was an important member of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel before the pair became rivals. Escobar reportedly kidnapped El Tio’s daughter as revenge when he discovered he had stolen some cash from a drug shipment sent to the US.

The Los Pepes gang were Escobar’s rivals. El Tio joined up with them in order to get his kidnapped daughter back. He was later arrested and served 12 years in prison, but continued his criminal career when he was released.

El Tio’s operations expanded following his stint in prison, and at one point it’s estimated he was trafficking around 10 tons of cocaine to the US and Europe per month.

His huge profits allowed him to reportedly buy over 300 properties in Colombia, Mexico and the US, including Escobar’s former home La Fortaleza in Medellin – where El Tio was arrested.

The investigation is ongoing, as of January 8, 2020
